The Creepiest Food You Should Be Eating – NOT!

Before I begin, be forewarned that this post may not be something you should read if you’re eating something right now. So, I just read an article titled, The Creepiest Food You Should Be Eating, and creepy is a huge understatement. This article addressed the many benefits of eating bugs.  It highlighted the tradition dating back to ancient Rome and Greece. I won’t say how disgusting it is to me, since to each his own. But evidently it’s a widely accepted practice that even has a name. Insects are low in fat, calories, and sodium but excellent sources of protein, iron, and vitamin B – among other benefits.

Entomophagy, it’s called, which is the practice of eating insects as defined by Merriam-Webster. People steam them and grill them.  Some people kabob them and even cover with them caramel or chocolate.  In fact for years, cochineal extract (known as carmine) from the cochineal bug was used to make red food coloring. It was only about 18 months ago that Starbucks stopped using the bug extract in it’s foods.  Tropicana and Dannon still use the bugs to color its food. Several other companies do too.  Most people have no idea what it is they’re eating.  They follow the mantra of Andrew Zimmern: “If it looks good, eat it.”  I bet they’d be repulsed if they knew what was in their foods.  That’s one reason why I lean toward eating whole foods.  The more whole, the better for me.

I don’t understand those who knowingly eat insects. Many vendors sell gourmet insects, such as Candy Favorites, Hotlix Candy-Coated Insects, or Thailand Unique Edible Insects and Bugs just to name a few.  And of course, you can find plenty of other edible bugs for sale on Amazon.com.

It’s your thing. Do what you wanna do.  As for me, I’ll pass.
