Some of Us Will Believe Anything
It’s really funny to me how quickly people believe things without taking the time to check them out first. There’s some satirical reporting about Patti Labelle and Aretha Franklin having a fist fight and Labelle being arrested. There evidently is only one source of information on this topic, TheNewsNerd. This online publication, one that focuses on stories wrought in satire, addressed a dispute that began at a White House event. Supposedly there really was a dispute at the White House. But that served as the basis for this satirical piece. And now, lots of people seem to think it’s true. The News Nerd, likeThe Onion, and other similar papers, publishes stories for fun. People missed the disclaimer on the site, a disclaimer that states, “The stories posted on TheNewsNerd are for entertainment purposes only. The stories may mimic articles found in the headlines, but rest assured they are purely satirical.” It’s weird that nobody thinks it’s odd that such a story isn’t found from a reputable, AP-based news source. AP news can be inaccurate too; but it’s a good chance that if something is only being reported on an entertainment site, it’s probably not legitimate.
